Choosing your kitchen floor covering

When renovating your kitchen, one of the most important elements to consider is flooring. Depending on your house’s year of construction, it is possible that the current floor will be perfectly suited to your new kitchen cabinets, especially if it features neutral tones. If, on the other hand, it is damaged and/or in dire need of updating, take the opportunity to replace it. Give your kitchen a facelift with floor coverings that will surely brighten up the room.

1) Flooring: wood

Solid wood flooring gives the kitchen a warm and cozy feel. Some may be reluctant to have it installed in the kitchen, as it is a high traffic room and water damage can occur due to the presence of the dishwasher and sink.

Thanks to new technologies, the surface of wood flooring has become significantly more resistant to wear and tear. Furthermore, wood is a durable and timeless material that is beautiful and easy to maintain. It is also important to remember that water can only damage your floor if a large amount is left on the surface over a long period of time.

2) Flooring: marble look ceramic

Ceramic or porcelain tiles are dense, water resistant but above all very durable. This product will last for years and replacing it often is more of a fashion choice than a necessity. This is why ceramic tiles are mostly found in the kitchen and bathroom. Ceramic is a low maintenance product, which makes it the perfect floor covering.

It also looks great in shades of black and can fit beautifully with many styles: it could be more of a farmhouse look with shaker cabinet doors and shell handles or a nice addition to a more modern design with stainless steel appliances. Elegance and refinement await!

3) Flooring: stone look ceramic tiles

If you prefer ceramic with rich shades of gray, cover the kitchen floor with stone-look ceramic tiles. They will add texture and style to your new kitchen. The finish can be satin or matte and the shades range from warm gray to charcoal gray. They’re simply gorgeous!

4) Flooring: patterned ceramic

Cover your floor with patterned ceramic tiles to energize the decor and give it an artsy feel. Bring Europe into your kitchen with geometric or floral patterns. While these tiles are ideal for a small kitchen floor, they should be used sparingly in a large kitchen to avoid spoiling the effect.

5) Flooring: wood imitation ceramic

Wood-effect ceramic is a material of choice for renovating your kitchen and its popularity continues to grow. In fact, thanks to manufacturing techniques that have greatly improved over the years, wood-effect ceramic tiles look almost identical to wooden floors. By printing high-resolution images of wood grains on ceramic, manufacturers are able to reproduce wood’s natural look in an extremely realistic way, whether it is oak, cherry or other wood varieties. Wood imitation ceramic tiles are greatly appreciated because they are more durable than wood, more resistant to water and scratches, while still providing a warm look. They also blend perfectly with all types of decor, whether it is classic, modern, contemporary or farmhouse.

Available in many textures, colors and finishes, it becomes an excellent alternative to hardwood or engineered flooring. For maximum comfort and if your budget allows it, you should also consider installing a heated floor in your kitchen.

6) Flooring: vinyl

Did you know that vinyl and ceramic share many of the same advantages? Just like ceramic, vinyl is resistant, durable and easy to clean. The main difference is comfort. Unless you have a heated floor in the kitchen, vinyl will be much more comfortable for your feet because it will remain at room temperature, whereas ceramic tends to stay colder.

Also good to know, vinyl is usually available with a ceramic look. The result is really impressive!
